WESTERN YOUNG WINDS
Western Young Winds provides supplementary instrumental music education for students in grades six through nine with the goal of fostering closer ties between local school music programs and the music education program at Western University. The Young Winds program involves both a full band experience as well as small group lessons organized by instrument family. The primary teachers in the Young Winds program are a select group of undergraduate students from the Western University instrumental music teacher education program. The program offers a "real-world" teaching experience for our pre-service music teachers, under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Watson and Dr. Colleen Richardson, director of the Western University Wind Ensemble. Opportunities are available for doctoral students in music education to serve as co-ordinators and mentors within the program. All activities serve the purpose of strengthening students’ musicianship and teachers' professional development in a safe and positive environment.
